My favorite photography programs

Photography isn’t about only one click. It’s about a lot of clicks and having to view, select and edit them afterwards. It’s a long, but rewarding process. A process during which it’s important to have the right tools for that perfect photograph.

There are a lot of programs out there to edit your shots with: both free and at a (monthly) price. I’ve been doing photography for more than 10 years which is why I got to work with a lot of them. These are my favorites and the reasons why:

Adobe Lightroom

You’ve probably heard of Adobe Lightroom before. It’s focused on editing your shots and has a large amount of filters you can use to give your shot that extra touch you might be looking for.

Adobe Lightroom always saves your past edits and it’s very easy to use. Working at home or at the office? No problem, you can use the app which you can download at your Creative Cloud. Seeing and editing your shot on a big screen, makes it easier to look at the details and refine those. Being on your way won’t ever be a problem as well, since the app can be downloaded on your phone/tablet too. Uploading that Instagram post/story is easy.

This photograph was made during the day when the sky was blue. With Adobe Lightroom I made it look like it was shot during the night.

Adobe Photoshop

In some photographs, it’s going to take a little bit of extra work to finally have that perfect photograph. Now and then, (too many) people can be in the way. Or you made more pictures of a couple and that one photograph you feel is the one, one of them is having their eyes closed. These difficulties are easily solved in Adobe Photoshop.

You can touch up your shots by the amazing tools it provides you. The people can be seamlessly erased and you can have the couple both having their eyes open. Because Photoshop provides you with a lot of tools, it can be overwhelming at first when you start using it. Therefore, I advise you to watch some YouTube videos on it or go through the help that Adobe sets you up with when you open the program.

This was my former home because of which I didn't want the world to know where I lived exactly. So I used Adobe Photoshop for removing my apartment number out of the picture.

iPhone settings on the picture itself

There are times I make my pictures on my iPhone. This way, I don’t have to bring my fully packed camera bag with me. I just need to get my phone. Whenever I feel like the colors need just a little bit more brightening or I need a simple black and white adjustment, iPhone settings offer you these simple steps too. It’s simple, fast and you don’t need to download an extra app with a lot of MB usage.

This photograph was made with my iPhone and edited by the settings.

HUJI

HUJI is an app that you have to pay for only once. Its filters used to be trendy a couple of years ago. However, I still like to use it from time to time.

The filters give you that film kind of look, where the date is printed on and some colors (sometimes only one, sometimes a combination of multiple colors) are faded over it. You can upload your selected photograph multiple times so you can get multiple different filters on the photo. Additionally, you can make a photo in the app and it will get you the filter on it automatically.

Several celebrities used to use the app as well.

In this shot you can see the fadings of the colors that got placed over the photograph, with on the left the date.
